Since the Middle Ages,

Leather gloves became popular in Europe. They were used both to protect hands from the elements and as a fashion accessory for noblemen. Tanners settled in the town of Grasse due to its strategic proximity to the trade routes to Genoa and Pisa.

However, the smell of the leathers after tanning, despite their quality, remains nauseating. The nobility's enthusiasm for gloves therefore diminishes sharply...

Although the story of how scented gloves arrived at court remains uncertain, Catherine de Medici is said to have imported scented gloves from her beloved Florence, thus masking the odors of tanning. This is how the profession of glove maker-perfumer was born: a craftsman capable of creating scented leather gloves with subtle blends of fragrances.

It was only under the reign of the Sun King that the Master Glove-Maker Perfumer patent was issued to a corporation of glove-makers.

He is also credited with creating a market for scented gloves by imposing a tax on ordinary gloves, but not on scented ones. This strategy stimulated demand for scented gloves and led to a boom in the glove-perfuming profession.
