How to get your hat back in shape?

Has your felt hat been deformed by the rain? Or has your Panama straw hat gotten a bad crease? It's possible to get it back into shape in most cases. If your hat is made of felt or straw, dampen it with a water spray, reshape it, and let it dry. It's important not to put it on the radiator! If you have an iron, you can spray the hat with hot steam. For straw hats, it's best to place a thin cloth between the hat and the iron to avoid burning the straw. Finally, if the hat is too deformed, you can bring it to our store, and our experts will tell you if we can completely reshape it on a wooden last! We can even replace the crown and the ribbon.

Where to store your hat?

When you get home and your hat is damp, it is essential to let it dry away from a heat source. Do not put it on the radiator! Your hat will dry in the shape you left it. So, if it is a flat-brimmed hat, lay your hat flat on a table. If the brim is turned down at the front, lay it flat on the table but with the front edge of the hat sticking out over the edge of the table (so it can be turned down!). If it is a floppy hat, with a round crown, you can put it on a coat rack. Finally, if you have several hats, you can stack them by putting a strip of foam between them if you have one! And if you don't have one, don't hesitate to stop by the shop, we will give you some.

How to take care of your hat?

Each material has its own specific characteristics! When you take your felt hat out of the closet after summer, it deserves to be brushed to remove dust. Choose a soft-bristled brush (like a baby brush - available in stores) and brush the hat in the direction of the hair. For Panama hats, the straw often dries out after winter, so it's best to lightly moisten it with a spray to prevent it from breaking. Avoid pinching it at the crown, as this is where the straw is most likely to break. Our Panama hats have a small foam pad inside to protect them from this.
