AN ANCESTRAL HISTORY
Archaeological excavations in Anatolia attest that the origin of felt dates back to the Neolithic period (7,000 to 3,000 BC), making this material one of the oldest made by man. The felting technique appeared in Central and Western Asia and spread rapidly to Europe, which, then, became masters of hat-making techniques from the Middle Ages. The number of hatmakers grew and some French towns then lived solely from this activity.
In the post-war period, fashion forced the hat into disuse, and the hat-making profession gradually disappeared in France and Europe. But the knowledge continued to be passed down orally, from hatter to hatter, reaching us today.
This is how Frédéric, a master hatter for over 40 years, one of the last in France, allows us to see and wear hats that faithfully follow the hat-making tradition.
On wooden forms, he still shapes each hat by hand after having prepared them with a brush.
